State Health Secretary, Juan Antonio Nemi Dib, said that even though campaigns like the “Ice Bucket Challenge” are important to visualize strange diseases like the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), it is also truth that there are other priorities in Mexico like oral health, stating that 92 percent of the children and youth suffer them and most do not know that a cavity could end up becoming a cardiopathy that could kill you.

“It is good that this type of phenomenon help certain diseases get noticed, but it is obvious, from a public health perspective, that there are other priorities, a simple example would be oral health.”

The public servant said that he would apply public resources to these denominated “strange” diseases only in terms of its volume demand, since it is more important to guarantee the youths’ oral health, as more of 92 percent of the underage population suffer from cavities.

Nemi Dib highlighted that diseases like sclerosis in its different variations are not common in Veracruz or in the world, that is why they are not visible and are denominated “strange” diseases.

He said that there is a considerable amount of unfrequented syndromes, like the case of Mateo, a boy that suffers cervical lymphangioma, a case suffered by one out of 100 thousand people, making it a disease that has not being studied as much and with few treatments, this due to its little epidemiologic incidence.

“It is great that this kind of marketing phenomenon becomes visible, but we need to go to the beginnings… I do not exclude de ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, it is good that they get noticed, but we need to recover the traditions of oral hygiene, we need to look after unintended pregnancy in young women, alcohol and tobacco consumption it is damaging our health and we need to emphasize on these subjects in a rigorous way.”

He also said that responsible sexuality should be promoted, as it is part of the freedom that parents have when deciding to raise a family, but not as an incident. “We need to think regarding the reproductive health as a planning instrument for the family life.”
