From the 450 complaints regarding medical malpractices in 2014, only 27 were real: Stadelman

So far this year, the State Medical Commission has received 450 complaints; and from these numbers, only an average of 27 had been confirmed as medical malpractices. The most recurring are due to bad medical attention from the staff of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) and other health institutions, said the head of the commission Emilio Stadelman.


“Only six percent of these complaints were translated into medical malpractices,” adding that until this moment there are not complaints from the Zongolica region; also saying that most of these don’t have a basis and are brought because of lawyers’ advice.

He stated that these numbers are lower in reference to other years. “The complaints are decreasing regarding medical malpractices, most are administrative issues.”

He said that monthly, they receive an average of 45 complaints, adding that not everything stays that way, because they give advice to hospitals to correct and improve in those mistakes so they don’t happen again; “every state receive about the same amount of complaints, at least that is what we know, after our recent national meeting, the average is between 25 and 35 monthly.”

Regarding the health institutions that have the most numbers of complaints, he said that they are the ones that assist most of the population, like the IMSS, ISSSTE and the Health Office, saying that there is an overpopulation of patients in these places.
